5 Content Writing Tips for Every Small Business Owner

As you look ahead and plan for 2026, marketing your business definitely takes priority. What you say about your business online and how you say it is crucial.

This is where good content writing comes in.

More customers are using AI tools like ChatGPT to learn about you (we call this Answer Engine Optimisation). With good content, you have a better chance of getting rankings on AI sites. There are so many content writing tips you can use, but here are a few of my suggestions on how to create strong content that builds trust, authority, and visibility.

TL;DR (Summary) Words have the power to sell. When it comes to promoting your business, the right words will engage your audience and convert them into customers. Be sure that your content is original and reflects all that your business stands for. Add visuals and infographics to improve your messaging. Post your content often to be seen digitally, and do not sound like a robot!

5 Content Writing Tips

Here are 5 content writing tips every small business owner should know:

Tip #1: Write for Your Customer, Not Your Business

People want to know what you can do for them, not just what you do. Let’s say you run a kindergarten. When you speak to them or their parents, you will be able to understand their needs and solve their problems – which allows you to provide better content

For example, HelloFresh, a food delivery company, addresses the pain point of “What shall I cook for dinner?” through its blog, The Fresh Times. Here, customers can find delicious recipes for everyday meals, nutrition hacks, and seasonal tips. Customers are more inclined to follow this blog because of its interesting, constantly updated content.

Tip #2: Don’t Ignore Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO)

Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) is the process of structuring content so AI systems can easily extract and deliver precise answers to customers’ questions. AEO is powered by companies like Google, Microsoft, Apple, and Amazon. It helps customers to get answers without clicking on links and builds their trust in what you do.

AI tools like Claude, Perplexity and ChatGPT synthesise direct answers from multiple sources and present them as original, helpful content. In order for your content to be picked up by these AI tools, it must be clear, authoritative, structured, and original. Trust me when I say that originality is the most important point here.

This will help to answer real customer questions properly. Especially since research shows that up to 40% of Gen Z now search using AI. Also, AI values original content, not content from ChatGPT. So if you’re using ChatGPT to write your articles, it won’t get picked up by AI (because AI has already sourced the answer).

Tip #3: Write More Content, Make It Valuable

It is important to keep in touch with your customers through blogs, website updates, social media, and emails. Consistent content improves Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), making your digital presence visible. It also helps to build brand authority.

But don’t write for the sake of writing. Make sure your content is valuable, as quality always beats quantity. The best way is to write about topics that interest your customers. When you do this, you draw them in and get their attention.

You can then gently mention your product, and this will sit better with them. They are more likely to reach out to you if they find that you understand their needs and can help them. I call this the ‘You Should Also Method’ and to find out more about this approach, check out my blog.

Tip #4: Prioritise Originality in the World of AI

The numbers say it all. 55% of customers are uncomfortable with AI content, and Google has classified this type of content as ‘low rating.’

One of the best content writing tips I can give you is this: your customers are smart, and they can tell when a piece of content lacks originality or human nuance. This is most likely to happen when you overuse AI-generated content

In truth, I use AI tools all the time to check my work and boost my ideas. It is interesting to see what it comes up with, but AI certainly cannot write from the heart. It lacks emotion – and your customers know this.

Let’s say you are a baker who specialises in selling cupcakes. If you ask AI to write about your speciality, it will take all the generic statements about cupcakes on the internet and put them together for you. But what about your personal story, values, and tone? Perhaps you are using your grandmother’s recipe, which has a heartwarming story behind it?

Only you can articulate this in your own voice and with passion. Your authenticity will help you win the favour of customers plus build trust and credibility.

Tip #5: Diversify Your Content Formats

You need to reach out to your customers on multiple platforms to be seen digitally. Combining blogs, social posts, case studies and infographics is a sure way to create brand awareness. The one piece of content you create in a blog, for example, can be repurposed into emails, social media posts and Google posts.

When you do this, your key messaging will remain the same, but it must be shortened and enhanced with enticing visuals to suit the different content formats. This will help to build your digital footprint and increase your online presence.

Be sure to use striking visuals and choose your platforms according to where your target audience lives digitally. When speaking to Gen Z, YouTube, TikTok and Instagram are the ideal places to be.

If you are promoting technical services like finance or law, I recommend reaching your clients through eBooks and thought leadership blogs. By putting your business out there, you are telling customers that you are ready to solve their problem, even if they are not ready to buy from you yet.

Common Content Writing Mistakes Small Businesses Still Make

One of the biggest mistakes in content is not doing it at all. As the owner of a small business, you must be busy with daily tasks. And you probably sit down to write a blog only when you have time.

While this is understandable, it is a mistake not to constantly connect with your customers. They need to know that you are out there and keeping up with all that is happening. If you find yourself pressed for time, always get a professional content writer for help.

At Inkspot Marketing, I work with clients to find their own voice and create an identity that their customers will LOVE. This is how your customers will remember you. Do not imitate your competitors, as you will become a ‘me too’ and be lost in the whirlwind of communication.

Great Content Takes Strategy, Not Just Effort

In a nutshell, when writing content, be sure to address your customers’ needs and pay attention to Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO). Release content frequently and make it valuable and original. Always remember to expand your messaging to other platforms to increase your brand’s visibility and presence.

When you write constantly in a certain tone and style, you begin to engage with the audience and build brand loyalty. If you’re looking for extra help with content, contact our team today and let’s discuss where your marketing can take you this year.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best content writing tips for small businesses in 2026?

Be original and don’t fall into a trap where you sound just like your competitors. Make an effort to create your own brand voice and identity. Always write for your customers in a way that solves their problems, as this shows that you understand them and will result in them trusting you.

How often should small businesses publish content?

You should post at least one or two long-form pieces of content in a month. These could be blog posts or eBooks, depending on the nature of the business. The more content you have, the better your digital footprint becomes. This is what Google looks for, and it is called Domain Authority. Your frequent posts will also help customers to build their trust in you.

Does AI-written content hurt SEO?

Absolutely! It is not original and is taken from other parts of the web. Google will not recognise it, as other websites would have already used it. You will also not gain SEO rankings, and your efforts will be wasted. It is best for you to create your own content, based on your experience and your customers’ pain points. This builds credibility, and the search engines will appreciate it!

How does content writing improve my website’s visibility?

It increases your digital footprint and domain authority. Content like eBooks can also be turned into an advertising or lead generation strategy, where you promote your eBook with an advertisement and ask customers to download it. That way, you will get leads while offering valuable content. Users will start to engage with you, and your website will become more popular.

What types of content should small businesses focus on first?

Blogs and social media posts are the easiest types of content to come up with. They help to drive traffic to your website and engage with the customer. Google My Business postings will also draw attention. If you have technical products or services, consider expanding into eBooks and reports, as your audience will expect detailed explanations on the various subject matters.
